Teaching Monopoly with Tim Vandenberg

Teaching Monopoly with Tim Vandenberg

You may have used the board game Monopoly to teach your kids about counting money or maybe landownership and rent.  Did you know it can be used as a classroom tool for teaching not just math, but also interpersonal skills, critical reasoning, problem solving, and more?  Stay tuned for today’s Table Top Inventing Podcast, as educator and 2009 2nd Place Monopoly Championship Winner Tim Vandenberg shares how he uses this fantastic game as a teaching tool with his 6th grade students.  Tim tells us about Monopoly’s history and the common core standards it teaches.  His students consistently do extremely well on standardized tests, and manage to defeat national and international champions at Monopoly tournaments using the lessons they’ve learned by playing the game.  If you’d like to learn more, please watch Tim as he gives a presentation on “Monopoly Academy”, at the 2012 Gamification Summit here.
